When it comes to crystals, there is definitely no ‘one size fits all’ approach. This is especially true of crystal jewellery (no matter how beautiful it may be!). Every crystal contains its own unique healing properties which can heavily affect the energy of the person using (or wearing) it. Many crystals and gemstones, such as Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Sapphire and Citrine are exceptionally high-vibrational and cleansing. These stones absorb little to no negative energy and actually help to repel and cleanse the energy field of the wearer, restoring harmony, balance and inner joy. These types of crystals are fine to wear every day, and require only occasional cleansing.
However not all crystals are created equal. There are a few stones which, although highly effective healers, should never be worn for long periods, if at all. Malachite is one such stone. This unique green heart-stone is a powerful emotional healer and protector. When used in limited amounts, it can draw out illness and heavy energy from within the body, and protect against physical harm and toxicity. However, in its strength, lies its weakness. Malachite is so effective at absorbing and containing negative energies, that it can begin to amplify them, if it is not thoroughly cleansed between each use.
If worn continually, Malachite jewellery can actually begin to make you feel unwell, as it (and therefore you) continues to soak up and hold onto all your unwanted ‘stuff’. Its energy can become heavy and burdensome, which can make you feel ‘down’, or irritable or even physically sick. Malachite earrings may be responsible for unexplained headaches and dizziness, while a Malachite necklace may cause heaviness of heart, throat irritability/sickness and chest tightness. Other stones that may have an undesirable effect if worn for long periods include: Hematite, Moldavite, Jasper, Opal and Onyx, which all have very grounding energy. This can accumulate into considerable heaviness over time, especially when worn above the heart.
This is not to say that these stones should never be worn as jewellery. It is simply a case of good maintenance and ensuring that you remove and thoroughly cleanse the piece regularly. My preferred method for crystal cleansing is smudging the crystal with sacred herbs, such as white sage, or placing the stones under a full moon or sunlight.
So, the next time a beautiful piece of crystal jewellery is added to your collection, perhaps take note of exactly how the crystal interacts with your energy field. If you begin to feel suddenly unwell or moody, maybe it’s time to take off the rocks and get out the Palo Santo stick!
